Research Groups


The research group Anesthesiology investigates a variety of topics in the context of anesthesiology and pain medicine and is divided into three different sub-groups. It is supported by a study nurse team:

Anesthesiology and Molecular Biology (Dr. rer. nat. Christoph Lippuner, Prof. Dr. med. Frank Stüber)

We focus on the genetic predisposition for perioperative morbidity and mortality, with a special interest in the field of inflammation/immunology, cardiovascular research, pharmakogenetics and pain medicine.

Respiratory System/Pulmonary Gas Exchange (PD Dr. med. A. Vogt)
The Research Group Resipratory System/Pulmonary Gas Exchange investigates the ventilation-perfusion-ratio using the multiple inert gas elimination technique (MIGET). The SNF project 320030_133046 with the title „Time-resolved VA/Q distribution Analysis by Multiple Inert Gas Elimination Technique Based on Micropore Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry (MMIMS)“ is divided into three parts: 1) Establishment of an in vitro gas exchange model, 2) Comparison om MMIMS with high resolution MIGET in a porcine lung model, 3) Introduction of MMIMS-MIGET in the clinics with cardiac and thoracic surgery patients.

Anaesthetic Pharmacology (PD Dr. med. M. Luginbühl)
The Smart-Pilot View is a pharmacologic drug display that presents predicted or measured concentrations of propofol, volatile anaesthetics, nitrous oxide and opioids in relation to interaction isoboles. The combined potency of these drugs is also presented as Noxious Stimulus Response Index (NSRI), which is related to the potency of the drug combination to suppress response to laryngoscopy. Several interaction studies have been conducted in collaboration with the Departments of Anesthesia at Gent University (B) and at Groningen University Medical Center (NL).
