Bone Biology & Orthopaedic Research

The interests of the Research Group “Bone Biology & Orthopaedic Research“ of the Department for BioMedical Research cover the following topics:

  • The biology of osteoblast and osteoclast lineage cells: with a focus in particular on the cross-reactivities between inflammatory processes and bone metabolism (Ruef N et al., 2017).
  • Biomaterials and bone repair: Osseointegration and turnover of biomaterials, molecular aspects of defect repair in “challenged“ bone, i.e. osteoporosis, bone under therapeutic treatments (Hauser M et al., 2018).
  • Molecular transport mechanisms in bone cells: Molecular transporters control the transport of small and large molecules across membranes. They are crucial in cellular functions in the context of the cells’ enivronment. Within the NCCR Platform, we study in particular the roles of iron transport in osteoclast biology and in bone homeostasis under conditions of iron deprivation and/or hypoxia (Xie W et al., 2016). 
  • Development of osteoblast and osteoclast lineage cells in response to Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMP) and their antagonists.
