Research Focus

The University Department of Ophthalmology is internationally recognized for the execution of preclinical and clinical research. This includes internal research projects as well as multicenter studies for the innovative development of novel therapies. Thereby, the department has developed excellent research networks and our numerous collaborations span across national and international university centers, industry partners and leading international pharmaceutical companies. Planning as well as conducting preclinical and clinical research are as much part of the clinic's expertise as the implementation of innovative developments of new therapeutic procedures. Basic research is an important part of the Department of Ophthalmology as an academic institution affiliated with the University of Bern. The strategic research priorities are thereby genetics, ocular immunology, retinal degeneration and regeneration, ocular inflammation and retinal vascular disease. There is also a strong commitment to innovation and translational research with multiple international academic and industrial partners. Furthermore, teaching activities include lectures, wet labs as well as supervision of MD, PhD and master theses of students from the University of Bern.
